Ho’oponopono: How Many Times Should You Say It?

By Neeti Keswani — Business Storytelling Coach | Ho’oponopono Practitioner | Host of Luxury Unplugged Podcast

Introduction

One of the most common questions I get as a Ho’oponopono practitioner is:
“How many times should I say the phrases?”

And I love this question—because behind it is a real desire to do it right. But here’s the thing: Ho’oponopono isn’t a ritual of counting. It’s a rhythm of cleansing.

There’s no fixed number. No “3 times and you’re healed.” It’s not like a prescription. It’s more like brushing your soul—daily, gently, lovingly—through Ho’oponopono meditation.

Still, let’s explore this question deeper from multiple perspectives so you can craft your own practice with purpose, intention, and love.

    1. The Simple Answer: As Many Times As You Need

    You can say:
“I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you.”
as many times as it takes for you to feel a shift.

That shift might be a release of emotion, a breath of clarity, a moment of stillness-or simply a softening of what you were holding on to.

Some days, 3 repetitions during Ho’oponopono meditation might bring peace.
Other days, you might say it for 10 minutes or more.

Let your body be your guide. When you feel lighter or more centered-you’ll know you’ve touched the heart of Ho’oponopono.

    2. What Dr. Hew Len Taught About Repetition

Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len, a key figure in modern Ho’oponopono, never offered a fixed number.

He focused on continuous cleaning-a practice of quietly repeating the four phrases during daily life:
    While driving.
    While cooking.
    While walking.
    Even while listening.

This ongoing Ho’oponopono meditation becomes a background frequency in your day-a healing pulse.

It’s not about perfection or precision. It’s about consistency and presence.
You’re not fixing something-you’re cleaning your connection to it.

    3. For Focused Healing: Try Timed Practice

If you prefer structure in your Ho’oponopono meditation, try this:

    • Set a timer for 5, 10, or 15 minutes.
    • Sit comfortably.
    • Close your eyes.
    • Breathe gently.
    • Repeat the four phrases with intention.

You can also direct this meditation toward a specific memory, relationship, or fear.

Over time, this focused approach helps regulate your nervous system and deepen your trust in Ho’oponopono. Eventually, you won’t need a timer-you’ll begin to clean naturally, as part of your being.

    4. What If You’re Saying It Without Feeling?

This happens more often than you think.

Don’t worry. Even if you don’t feel anything, Ho’oponopono meditation still works. Your subconscious mind is receiving the vibration of the phrases.

If you feel numb or disconnected, you can clean that too:

“I’m sorry I’m not feeling anything.
Please forgive me for judging this.
    Thank you for staying.
    I love you for trying.”

The practice of Ho’oponopono honors willingness over perfection.

    5. When Should You Stop?

    You don’t really “stop” Ho’oponopono.
It becomes a way of moving through life.

But in a focused session, you can pause when:

    • You feel calm or grounded
    • An emotional charge has lifted
    • You gain clarity or peace
    • Tears arise and bring relief
    • Compassion softens your thoughts

These are all signs that Ho’oponopono meditation is doing its work. Let it unfold at its own pace.

    Final Thoughts

So, how many times should you say Ho’oponopono?

As many times as your soul asks.
As long as it takes to return to peace.

    Whether it’s:

    • 108 times with a mala bead
    • 4 times with trembling hands
    • 400 times whispered throughout your day

It’s not about the number. It’s about the love.
    The devotion.
The willingness to heal-even when it’s messy.

Ho’oponopono meditation is a return-not to perfection, but to presence.

So when you next ask, “How many times should I say it?”
    Whisper back to yourself:
    “Until I feel peace again.”
